[Audissect] is the debut album from Galway based electronic producer Ventolyn and Becotyde (V & B). The album opens with Galway Dawns, a pleasant track which sums up most of the first half of the album- ghostly strings, echoy synths and twisted beats.
audissectBike is a nice track based around a rolling synth loop while darker elements slowly emerge in the hazy Alkaliner Distances. The album quickly leaves its brighter side as V & B gets serious with my personal favourite Bass Tamers System Lick. The sinister wobbling bass which dominates this track is complimented with spooky synths and the whole thing works extremly well. Early era Warp artists such as Plaid and Aphex Twin and glitchy IDM producers such as Hexq and Venetian Snares are the most audible influences here but thankfully their styles are referenced without being replicated.
V & B’s most admirable achievement is his attention to detail within each track. It’s easy to have a good idea but the tracks here go beyond an initial good idea
V & B continues to explore darkness in tracks like Bit7Op which reaches almost gabba proportions, the oppressive glitchs of Pop Music and Tu Onk Jux’d which sounds like an army of clockwork insects marching towards battle. All the while this sinister darkness is countered by the brighter tracks such as Witnessed My Circuitry and Night Mind which reminds Drop-d of Aphex Twin’s early Ambient Works.
Sodium City Sprawl is a perfect closer to this album and offers respite from the threatening breakcore piece which precedes it. It’s infectious beats and Vector Lovers style hooks make it impossible not to nod your head to.
Clocking in at an impressive 22 tracks there’s lots to like on [Audissect]. The haunting bass wobble of Bass Tamers, the psychedelic bliss of Galway Dawns, the relaxed ambience of Exit Body, the phantom rave of Xav Vectik. The varied range of styles on [Audissect] is due in part to V & B’s comfort and ability to construct different types of beats whether they be techno, jungle, hip hop or broken. But V & B’s most admirable achievement is his attention to detail within each track. It’s easy to have a good idea but the tracks here go beyond an initial good idea. Careful mastering allows every tracks to evolve fully and maks each one of them special in their unique way. [Audissect] is a great debut and it will be interesting to see where Ventoyln & Becotyde goes from here.
